Imperial does not publish a hard threshold. The typical successful applicant lands 5.5+ on the new 1.0 to 7.0 scale. The competitive band sits closer to 6.5+. Above 7.0 you are in the top decile of the applicant pool. Below 5.5, a successful application becomes meaningfully harder unless the rest of the file is exceptional.

What if I haven't done much programming yet?

Start now. Pick a real problem in your life and build something for it in a language you find interesting. Imperial's admissions team can tell the difference between someone who has been programming for a year and someone who has been programming for a week. Even one small shipped project beats a personal statement about loving algorithms with no evidence.

BEng or MEng for Computing applications?

MEng is the standard application for most Imperial Computing applicants because it is the four-year accredited degree the department designed around. The BEng exists as a step-down option but the admissions team typically reads MEng applications first. Apply MEng unless you have a specific reason not to.

How does the TMUA stack against my A Levels?

Accepted Answer

Standard offer is A*A*A with A* in Maths and ideally Further Maths. The TMUA score does not substitute for predicted grades; it sits beside them. A predicted A*AA with a TMUA 7.0+ rarely lands an offer; a predicted A*A*A* with a TMUA 5.0 also rarely lands an offer. The two signals have to be coherent.

Are there contextual offers at Imperial Computing?

Yes, but they are narrower than Oxbridge's. Imperial's STEM Potential and contextual data flags can drop the standard offer by one grade. The TMUA expectation does not drop. If you are a contextual flag candidate, the lever is the predicted grade, not the test score.
